Our journey
June 2017

Our inspiration came from Ben – a family friend with a severe hand tremor. He struggled a lot with eating and could not afford existing solutions on the market which cost upwards of £150.
Ben isn’t alone, with up to 4% of the world population having a tremor, and many saying they struggle to hold a spoon.

Hemal, a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Warwick, decided to create his own affordable solution for Ben as part of his third-year project. Having received ethical approval to interview people with tremors, he made these early prototypes, pictured.

We invented a mechanism which reduces the effect of a tremor by up to 70% . Unlike competitors, this mechanism uses no costly electronics and is entirely mechanical instead! The picture shows the testing rig we built, which shakes the spoon and measures how much it moves, along with the results.

The stablspoon team won the Spark Product Development Fund 2019 and were awarded funding, as well as design and business mentorship, sponsored by the Design Council and the Alzheimer’s Society. The picture shows Hemal along with Deborah Meaden, leading UK entrepreneur, and Colin Capper, head of research for the Alzheimer’s Society.
